On Tuesday, Betsy Devos was confirmed by the Senate making her the nation’s newest education secretary. According to Emmarie Huetteman and Yamiche Alcindor of the New York Times, the vote was so controversial that a tie had to be broken by Vice President Mike Pence. This is the first time in history that a Vice president has been summoned to the Capitol building cast a tiebreaker vote on a cabinet nomination. Devos has recently faced public and political scrutiny for contributing to the campaigns of over half of the senators who voted in her favor. A final tally revealed the vote was a remarkably close 51-to-50.
Opponents argue that Devos, a billionaire charter school and voucher program proponent has almost no experience in public education. She, nor any of her children have ever attended public school, and she has never taught in one. In spite of her lack of qualifications she will be responsible for nearly 100,000 public schools.
